This year’s 2007 SLO International Film Festival is bigger and better than ever. In fact, there are so many films and related events that it’s physically impossible for one person to go to them all, which is why New Times has created this blog. Arts Editor Ashley Swellenbach and Senior Staff Writer Glen Starkey will post their thoughts on events they attend, inviting you to throw your own two cents in as well as tell us about what we missed at films and events we couldn’t attend. Our film festival journey began when the festival’s Executive Director, Wendy Eidson dropped a box of screening films at our door. After greedily foraging through the box, editorial staffers quickly established their individual favorites. For the Love of Dolly, Stalking Santa, The Damndest, Finest Ruins, The Lonely Boys, Our Land Our Life, Rose, Iraq in Fragments, Desert Dreamers, and The Six-day Bicycle Races all met with rave reviews. Then there are the films we eagerly anticipate—Ladylike, Peur Hoi Nang, A League of Their Own, Dante’s Inferno, and many, many more. Choosing which films to attend will be difficult, but we’ll let you know in advance which films we plan on attending and which we’ve already seen. On Thursday the festival will kick off with an opening night reception at Mother’s Tavern from 5:30 to 7 and a showing of the 1970 flick Patton with a discussion with the film’s cinematographer Fred Koenekamp at 7, and we plan to be there. Check for a listing of film fest events at www.slofilmfest.org and join in the discussion. Okay, let’s go to the movies!
